Democratic challenger Joe Biden grabbed a slender lead early Friday in Georgia in his crucial race against President Trump, surging ahead by just over 1,000 votes.

With 99% of the Georgia vote now counted, Biden appeared poised to flip the state where a Democrat last won in 1992 and capture its 16 electoral votes.

The challenger’s surge over the three days since the polls close was fueled by tens of thousands of mail-in ballots that went for Biden.

Trump defeated Hillary Clinton four years ago by more than 200,000 votes in the GOP stronghold.

Election workers were still counting the last remaining votes as Biden closed in on the magic number of 270 electoral votes needed to grab the White House.
