The U.S. surgeon general said this week will be the “hardest moment for many Americans in their entire lives” in a direct message to the nine governors who have yet to issue stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus outbreak.

“The next week is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment,” Vice Admiral Jerome Adams said on Sunday’s “Meet the Press.” “It’s going to be our 9/11 moment.”

Adams advised those governors to follow the “30 days to slow the spread” guidelines and emphasized that in order to flatten the curve, everyone needs to do their part in social distancing.

“Ninety percent of Americans are doing their part even in the states where they haven’t had a shelter-in-place,” he said. “But if you can’t give us 30 days governors, give us a week, give us what you can so we don’t overwhelm our health care system.”

Adams’s message echoes what President Donald Trump said on Saturday when he called this week “probably the toughest week.”
